Let's Talk Nolan Gorman

Nolan Gorman is a guy who I was very excited about before the 2022 MLB season. Although I am still rather optimistic about the rookie second baseman's future, I do not have the same mindset that I did just 7 months ago. This is because Nolan Gorman finally got his chance to play at the Major League level in 2022, and his play was rather disappointing. While he was far from being the worst hitter on the Cardinals, he did not live up to the hype that surrounded him throughout his journey through the Minor League system.

If I was asked before the 2022 season, "Who is the Cardinals' second baseman of the future?" I would have quickly and confidently said "Nolan Gorman." However, I am not too confident in this answer anymore. This is because Nolan Gorman was the second-best rookie second baseman on the team. The first best being Brendan Donovan. Donovan did nearly everything better during the 2022 season, from fielding, hitting, base-running, and coming through in the clutch. His fielding was good enough to earn him a Gold Glove at the utility position, and his overall play was good enough to make him an NL Rookie of the Year finalist. While Gorman's play wasn't even good enough to keep himself on the main roster. Therefore, I think Brendan Donovan could now be the answer to the earlier asked question.

Not so fast. Gorman's problems are clear and obvious. He cannot hit left-handed pitching, and he tries too hard for that home run swing. These both can be fixed. His great power, above-average glove, and ridiculous minor-league stats are enough for me to believe that he could still be the answer for the Cardinals. He just turned 22, and should not be expected to be producing like a superstar at this point in his career. If he can continue to develop, and learn to take pitches and hit against lefties, then he may have a chance of being the Cardinals' second baseman moving forward.

If Gorman cannot get to where Donovan is, then Donovan will be deserving of the spot. Nolan Gorman should still have value since he is so young and he has great power, making it to where a team may want to trade for him. This will just be something that cannot be fully understood until some time has passed.

As of right now, the Cardinals are facing a problem that most teams would like to have. Let's just hope that they handle it appropriately.
