The Voice of the St. Louis Cardinals
Whenever I am watching a Cardinals game at Busch, watching the game at a sports bar without the sound, or watching it on a channel that isn't Bally Sports Midwest, there is always something missing. This being the voice of Dan McLaughlin.
Dan McLaughlin is the voice of the St. Louis Cardinals television broadcast. He has been calling games for the St. Louis Cardinals for 25 years and rooting for them for 48. Since McLaughlin is a lifelong Cardinals fan and has been in the city of St. Louis for his entire life, his current position is a fitting one.
His love for the team goes beyond a paycheck as he truly cares about the success of the team. He offers genuine reactions that are rather hard to find in the world of sports. This commentary whenever the Cardinals do good or bad, makes it seem as though you are listening to a diehard fan who just wants what is best for his team. It seems like this is the case because it is.
Throughout the last couple of decades, McLaughlin has made some unforgettable calls. He's enthusiastically called walk-off home runs, game-tying plays, game-saving catches, and so much more. Some of my favorite calls that McLaughlin has made recently, which you can find here, here, and here, just show how much of a difference McLaughlin makes. These calls make it to where you miss McLaughlin whenever he is not hosting the tv broadcast, and make it hard for you to enjoy the nationally televised games that do not feature him.
To go with these energetic calls that McLaughlin has made, he also offers a ton of knowledge to the viewers at home. He is constantly making connections between current events and past events, bringing up Cardinals' history, and making it clear that he has been around the team for a very long time. This adds to the broadcast, as you are not just being entertained during the game, but informed.
Although McLaughlin never picks up a bat or throws a ball, he is still one of the first people I think of when I think about the St. Louis Cardinals. His contributions may not be seen on the field, but for those who watch the game at home, McLaughlin is a Cardinals legend.
